What is Attic Insulation?

Up to 25% of the heat lost in your home escapes through the roof. Insulating your loft helps to prevent this heat loss by acting like a blanket, trapping any heat rising from the house below. It has the opposite effect in the summer by insulating your house against the sun, ensuring your house is kept much cooler.

Installing attic insulation is fast and cheap. A quick and easy way to warm up your home and reduce heating bills.

Do You Need to Replace Your Attic Insulation?

The current SEAI standard for attic insulation is a depth of 300mm or 12″. If your loft has not been insulated in the last few years, it is most likely thinner and will require topping up in order to comply with SEAI regulations.

Do You Need Pipe Lagging?

Most Irish houses have copper pipe work in their attics which are at risk during cold winters when the pipes can freeze and eventually burst. Pipe insulation, or pipe lagging, can prevent this problem and can be done at the same time as topping up your loft insulation.

Do You Have Exposed Water Tanks?

Very often people’s homes also have exposed, cold water tanks in the attic. These can get contaminated by outside forces such as birds or rodents. In order to ensure that this kind of contamination stops, we can place rigid lids onto your exposed tanks in line with SEAI requirements.

Our Attic Insulation

We offer two types of rolled attic insulation; Earthwool, or for a more eco-friendly option, CosyWool.

Earthwool by Knauf Insulation

Earthwool is made from 80% recycled glass and a sustainable binder, made with ECOSE Technology, a new, formaldehyde free binder based on rapidly renewable bio-based materials instead of traditional petrol-based chemicals.

With Earthwool, you can rest assured that you are creating a healthy indoor environment, as it is odourless and completely non-toxic, and has been certified as “outstanding material” according to the VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) Indoor Air Quality emissions regulations.  It emits less than 1mg/m3 VOCs and has been awarded gold certification by Eurofins Gold for indoor air quality criteria.

Earthwool does not absorb moisture, is rot proof, fire resistant, and absorbs sounds from inside and outside your home.  It also absorbs common pollutants that can sometimes make their way inside your home.  All this with an added 50 year warranty and brilliant thermal performance, giving your home an assured level of comfort.

CosyWool by Thermafleece

Made from 75% sheeps wool and 25% recycled polyester, CosyWool is more effective than other products with higher percentages of wool. It has a thermal conductivity of 0.03W/mK, meaning that it performs very well as an insulator.

It is not only odourless and mould resistant, but also an effective way to regulate the humidity within your home as it is also breathable.

CosyWool can reduce CO2 emissions by many tonnes over the lifetime of use. What’s more, wool captures carbon dioxide, helping reduce greenhouse gas levels.

The only thing you need to do in advance is to ensure the loft floor is cleared.

Installation of attic insulation typically takes around three hours, including insulating pipes & water tanks, in addition to insulating and draft proofing the hatch. If your water tanks are more than 1m from the hatch, a walk board will also be fitted.

Your old loft was designed for much thinner insulation and generally once the new insulation has been put in place, it will rise 200mm above the roof joist of the attic, so you may need raised floors. We can take care of this for you and we are also able to fit Staira Stairs and lights to improve accessibility to your loft space.

Our insulation is non-toxic, so you will not need to vacate your home at any point during the installation process.  There is only a small amount of noise, and whilst some dust may be created, we use plastic sheeting to protect your floors and we always clean up after ourselves.

There is no maintenance required and the insulation will last for fifteen years before you need to top it up.  Best of all, you’ll feel the difference in your house overnight!
